Ouzinkie, Alaska

Ouzinkie was part of a statewide gathering of people making and putting on ribbon pins in support of suicide prevention "Alaskans unite to save a life" on February 23, 2005 at 6:00 PM. This idea was born during CBSPP (Community Based Suicide Prevention Program) annual workshop in October of 2004.

We made the ribbon pins which were distributed by children to everyone present. A circle of elders, adults, teenagers, and children put on their pins, held hands and said a prayer asking for strength to save a life. The merging of people in support of suicide prevention gave us a feeling of unity against a common enemy. We are no longer alone but united. Several people spoke of ways to strengthen our bonds with each other and within our community and state.

After the healing circle, we participated in a Family night activity of our five senses, continuing awareness of ourselves and each other.
The energy of this evening not only bonded people of Ouzinkie, but throughout the state with many communities united to save a life.

Some of the other villages that participated in the event were: Akutan, Brevig Mission, Shaktoolik, Goodnews Bay, Igiugig, Huslia, McGrath, Old Harbor, Ambler, Akiak, Kotlik, Mekoryuk, Upper Kalskag.
